From ancient Roman times to medieval era and then to modern science

This is a bit long title of the blog post, but I couldn’t think of better way to put all these different eras into one sentence. I was in Ljubljana and now that summer temperatures started there is a lot going on. This weekend there were three events that I checked out.
First I went to ancient Roman times when Ljubljana was named Emona. This year the city is celebrating 2000 years since this ancient city was established and there are different events and exhibitions on this topic. This weekend they made a small Roman military camp in the middle of the park in city centre. I must say I expected more, not only three or four tents and about ten soldiers and ten ordinary citizens and Caesar (or at least it think it was him). I liked the idea, since I am a huge fan of that era in history, but the realization just didn’t meet my expectations. But nevertheless it was still pretty cool and nice to see.
After that I came across a sign that directed me to Medieval fair. That was a pleasant surprise, although the fair was quite small and to be honest, not so interesting. Only few stands and not much cool stuff to check out. Or maybe I just visited too many fairs of this kind and I became more critical. But still, it was interesting to come from ancient times to medieval era. It was like a time machine, from 1st century to probably around 11th century or something like that. Not bad to jump 1000 years in only few minutes. =D
And on top of all that, this weekend there was a science festival called Znastival, so there were stands with different simple science experiments all over the city. I was a bit late, so I only checked a few, but I realized most of them must be interesting to children, to me, most of them were a bit boring. Or maybe I’m just really not very interested in science, or at least not on this level or topic or something. Anyway, it still felt a bit funny to jump from medieval times to more modern and scientific era.
And since I was in Ljubljana and it was a great sunny day, I couldn’t resist to take some ordinary photos too. So here is a small selection from this Saturday. =)

Exhibition opening at School 27. Julij, Kamnik

Nekaj dni nazaj sem pisala o moji delavnici z otroci iz šole 27. Julij v Kamniku.

Few days back I wrote about my workshop with kids from school 27. Julij in Kamnik. I am quite proud of their work and as I noticed, they are proud of their work too. Yesterday I delivered printed photos to the school and while we were framing them, kids started to jump around and wanted to see the photos, they were so excited. They obviously couldn’t wait to see their work on a wall.
Sadly I wasn’t able to come to the opening this morning, where even the major had a speech, but they were kind enough to share this link .

Photo workshop at school 27. Julij, Kamnik

Today was a bit special for me. I volunteered to lead a short photography workshop for kids from 7th to 9th grade, from school 27. Julij in Kamnik, Slovenia. This is a school for kids with learning problems, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it turned out as an interesting hour for me and for them (at least I hope so). =)
Since the day of birth of famous Slovenian general Rudolf Maister is coming, and Kamnik is his birthplace, we made this our main theme for photos. We visited his birth house that is now a museum, so kids took some photos there, then we went to see two of his statues in the city and a local bar and street that are named after him. The whole workshop was meant also to show these kids that you don’t really need a great camera to capture nice things, so they took all the photos with their mobile phones (luckily they all had smart phones, so that made things a bit easier).
Now I just have to make a final selection of photos, so they will be exhibited in their school. If you get a chance you are welcome to stop by at the opening, 25. March at 10:00 in their dining room.

Ice Age is melting

We are having a bit like an ice age here in Slovenia. I must say that I’m really happy our town and area around didn’t get the worst scenario, but many places did. For few days they say there were about 10% of slovenian households without electricity, many still don’t have it after five days! Some cities and villages are really like in ice age – so much ice everywhere, so many trees falling down, so much damage and general danger for everyone. Even our ZOO got in some trouble (this is actually quite funny) – two lynxs escaped and killed their neighbour chamois (like a mountain goat).
Anyway, at least around my home the situation got from a bit frozen to melting and I just went out to take some photos and see how much damage there is. Honestly, I can’t believe there is only few broken branches on the ground! We were so lucky! So here are some photos of our ice age coming to an end – hopefully in other parts of Slovenia as well!

Downhill biking training in Buzet, Croatia

12. 05. 2012

Larger part of downhill team of biking club Energija, went on a whole day training on saturday. My assignment for college was “documentary photography”, so I decided to follow their training for a whole day. And this means not only riding a bike, but everything else that comes with it and most people probably don’t see. We could say I was in “backstage” with them.
Here is only some photos, but you can see more of them in final multimedia product, that is combination of photo and video. It will get some small editing (with text mostly), but in general this is it.

Guys are ready for a ride to the top of the track.
Going up with a van.
Ride with me, ride with me… =)
On top they go out of the van and get ready for the ride down.
Going past the small chappel… Let’s pray for them! =)
Even trees bend to these guys… =D
After all these rides up and down, van needs something to drink…
It’s nice to end the day with refreshing swimming in the sea…
